The Sony X690E (KD-70X690E) is big — it’s more than 5 feet across and offers a whopping number of real estate. As Ultra HD resolution makes bigger screens more watchable as a result of a higher pixel density, the purchase price of 4K panels has dropped very fast, making extra-large TVs cheaper than ever. And this size makes for a more immersive viewing experience.
But there’s more to a TV compared to size, and the X690E left us needing better performance, more smart TV functions and a better overall experience.
If you’re looking for a huge TV, the Sony X690E is an OK mid sized 4K collection. The image quality and sound are fairly good and the attribute selection is less exciting than that which other Sony models provide, but it is usable. The big 70-inch display is the source of this set’s cost, and $1,299 isn’t half bad for a TV that stretches over half and 5 feet from corner to corner.
But despite the big screen and decent functionality, this Sony TV suffers from some strangely poor decisions in its own remote layout and menu design, which make it difficult to utilize some of the qualities that might have offered you on the screen in the first place. To get a display that’s nearly as large but minus the annoying menus and lackluster performance, think about the 65-inch Samsung MU7000 or Sony’s very own XBR-65X900E. Both of those sets offer exceptional performance and a more polished user experience for a similarly very affordable price.
