Autofocus: A phase-detect autofocus system with 39 AF points, nine of which are cross-type, is used by the Nikon D5600 while using the optical viewfinder. The autofocus performance is swift and reliable even though the AF points don’t cover a sizable section of the frame. With the camera’s ability to focus unaided down to about -1 EV, low light focusing performance is also good. If you have the AF assist light turned on, your subject must be sufficiently close and there must be enough contrast for the camera to focus even in complete darkness. Contrast-detect focusing is slower in Live View on the D5600, but it is still rather snappy, especially when using an AF-P lens.

Performance: In terms of startup time, autofocus speed, and single-shot cycle times, the Nikon D5600 performs better than its predecessor, but overall, it’s reasonable to expect little change. The D5600 is a reasonably rapid DSLR camera, able to shoot at about 5 frames per second (4 fps if utilizing 14-bit RAW instead of 12-bit RAW). Although sports shooters might like more speed, the speeds in real-world shooting are generally adequate for most circumstances. Because the RAW buffer depth was tested at 8 and 5 frames for 14-bit RAW and 14-bit RAW + JPEG, respectively, buffer depths are a problem while taking RAW pictures (shooting 12-bit RAW files will increase those figures). But because the buffer clears so quickly—in just a few seconds—the camera showed capable of shooting even with shallow buffer depths. When recording only JPEG photographs, you can shoot up to a very generous 100 frames in a burst for photographers that demand extra buffer depth.

Overall, both in the lab and for real-world shooting conditions, the camera handled and functioned admirably. When using the viewfinder, the D5600 offers an exceptional 970 photos on a single charge, which should be more than enough for the majority of shooting outings. A second battery can be a smart choice for photographers who want to use Live View or SnapBridge because such capabilities can reduce battery life.

Video: The D5600’s video capabilities aren’t particularly noteworthy, although it does enable HD video recording in acceptable quality. The camera can capture progressive scan video at 1920 x 1080 at up to 60 frames per second, which is on par with similarly priced DSLR rivals but behind certain mirrorless rivals. The articulating touchscreen is a smart and practical feature that can be twisted and extended to the side of the camera body. This allows you to take video of yourself while guaranteeing proper framing, which is very helpful for vloggers.

Generally speaking, the touchscreen performs admirably during video recording, making it simple to shift the focus point around the screen. The D5600 features silent and reasonably speedy autofocus when using an AF-P lens, such as the 18-55mm AF-P kit lens, during Live View and video recording. However, the camera does offer a good range of control during video recording and solid overall video performance. The 10 minute video clip limit for 1080p60 at High Quality and the 20 minute limit for 1080p60 at Normal Quality are perhaps a bit of a downside for some (29’59” for all modes is typical and would certainly be better).
