High Resolution Sensor for Stunning Image Quality The Nikon D5300 is an perfect camera for innovative novices and people who wish to get the absolute most out of their photography sessions. Featuring a 24.2 camera DX-format CMOS detector with EXPEED image processor, the D5300 shoots rich images with exact colour reproduction and sharp details. The 39-point autofocus system with burst speed of up to 5 frames per second lets you capture fast moving objects with ease.

Okay, something interesting is going on in DX. We have had four different 24mp DSLRs out of Nikon with no same precise sensor sitting behind the lens. Especially interesting is that the D5200 to D5300 change, because you have to appear really tough to find any difference. The detector markings look Sonyish, but the packaging is new and different than the Sony or the Toshiba 24mp sensors we have seen up to now, the AA filter was taken away ala the D7100, and find this: Nikon has finally changed their definition of black. The measurbators will find several other changes, too, some of which seem to indicate that the Bayer filtration has been modified again.

Why?

I can come up with theories, but since Nikon is not speaking, we will not be able to lock the answer. You’d think that with the entire DX lineup being 24mp cameras today that there is a price advantage to sourcing all the sensors the same, but I’m starting to wonder whether the volume of APS/DX detectors being used is stressing generation, and Nikon is just being opportunistic as a result of that. Or they might be experimenting. Or…well, who knows? I’ll speak about how the changes impact a few very subtle things in the performance section, but here is the brief answer: nothing’s changed enough to get stressed or excited about.

The D5300 popped out early, too, which is another mystery. The lower end DSLR (currently the D3200) was the sole iterating the speediest, with one year being the fastest turn, but all of the sudden we have the D5300 per year after the D5200 while the D3200 is currently a whopping 18 months old.

What exactly changed from the D5300 on the D5200 besides the puzzle sensor swap? EXPEED was upgraded to 4 . In other words, the black box even deeper beneath the secrecy covers compared to the sensor is newer. Part of that (plus maybe the sensor change) provides us 1080P/60 instead of 1080i/60 on the movie side, and allegedly slightly cleaner outcomes after compression.

The D5300 receives a biggerCD (3.2″ versus 3″) and picks up a couple of added dots (1.04m versus 921k) from the procedure. Same basic technologies, though. Surprisingly, despite the bigger LCD Nikon has trimmed a millimeter here and there and reduced the weight by nearly an oz (16.9 versus 17.8, or 480g versus 505g for my metric-loving friends). The CIPA shots per bill also went up from 500 to 600, likely since the battery is now a slightly heftier EN-EL14a.
